Current Events and the Classroom

Some teachers believe that young students should not hear about current events because the news would only scare them, or that they are not ready for that kind of violence in their lives. I, however, believe that it is important for students to be aware of what is going on in the world. There are ways that students can learn about what is going on in the world, and in a safe way. I believe that teachers can incorporate technology in the way that they tell students of what is going on in the world. An interesting way that teachers could incorporate current events and technology would be to create a current even scavenger hunt for the students. The students would be asked to search for current event facts, and in return, the students would compile it together in class and talk about what all of it means with the teacher. The students are able to learn how to look at the news on their technology devices, as well as speak with the teacher about what all of it means. This way, the students will not be overwhelmed by the violence of the news, but they will have knowledge of it through a safe classroom. Click here to look at a website created by the Washington Post that goes in depth into what important important events are happening in the U.S. and includes fun for kids too.
